Madleen

The painting “Madleen” immortalises an inspiring true story of resilience and struggle in Gaza. It portrays the Gazan girl Madleen Kullab, who was forced to confront the waves of the sea at a young age in order to support her family and siblings after the loss of her father. She became the first female fisherwoman in Gaza and a symbol of determination and defiance (one of the boats of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla was later named in her honour, recognising her struggle).

Madleen appears at the centre of the painting, standing firmly on her small boat amid the vast sea. She holds her raised oar like a banner of determination, surrounded by fishing nets, creating a visual dialogue between the girl’s tenderness and the harshness of her challenge

.تخلّد لوحة “مادلين” قصة حقيقية ملهمة للصمود والنضال في غزة. تجسد اللوحة الفتاة الغزية “مادلين كُلاب”، التي اضطرت لمواجهة أمواج البحر في سن مبكرة لتعيل عائلتها وأخوتها بعد رحيل والدها، لتصبح أول صيادة في غزة ورمزاً للتحدي (حتى سُميت إحدى سفن كسر الحصار باسمها تكريماً لكفاحها). تظهر مادلين في منتصف اللوحة واقفةً بثبات على قاربها الصغير وسط البحر الشاسع، تمسك بمجدافها المرتفع كأنه راية عزيمة، وتحيط بها شباك الصيد، في حوار بصري بين رقة الفتاة وقسوة المواجهة.
