Madleen<\/strong><\/p>\n

The painting\u00a0“Madleen”<\/strong>\u00a0immortalises an inspiring true story of resilience and struggle in Gaza. It portrays the Gazan girl\u00a0Madleen Kullab<\/strong>, who was forced to confront the waves of the sea at a young age in order to support her family and siblings after the loss of her father. She became the first female fisherwoman in Gaza and a symbol of determination and defiance (one of the boats of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla was later named in her honour, recognising her struggle).<\/p>\n

Madleen appears at the centre of the painting, standing firmly on her small boat amid the vast sea. She holds her raised oar like a banner of determination, surrounded by fishing nets, creating a visual dialogue between the girl\u2019s tenderness and the harshness of her challenge<\/p>\n
