Weather “Al-Majina“ (or Al-Qarqian/Al-Karkian in some regions of the Gulf and Iraq) is considered one of the most joyful Ramadan folk rituals, and its association with the night of the middle of Ramadan—which commemorates the birth of Imam al-Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him)—gives it a special significance and a festive atmosphere that combines religious significance with time-honored folk traditions.
On this night, children go out and walk through the old alleys dressed in traditional clothing, chanting famous songs such as “Majina, ya Majina, if it weren’t for the Khawaja, we wouldn’t be here,” while families open their doors to hand out candy and nuts to them amid an atmosphere of joy and social solidarity.
